Gary used references of the original lioness Elsa, famous from the film Born Free, for his Spirit of Elsa study which lacked any detail and were over 45 years old. But Gary said 'What could have potentially been a very difficult drawing proved to be one of the easiest and most rewarding pictures of my career. I felt at times the drawing drew itself as I was creating with such unconscious ease and spontaneity that it was almost like the spirit of Elsa had joined me in the studio.'

Gary Hodges is the UK's best selling and most collectable pencil artist with many awards to his name. Through his drawings, over one million pounds has been raised for wildlife and habitat conservation. Since 2015 he has drawn more than 175 embellished prints for many wildlife charities, each selling for prices of up to £6,700. Gary is a judge on our SFS Introducing competition and a patron of Sketch for Survival.
