Shufa - Western Lowland Baby Gorilla

Colour Pencil

29.7 x 42 cm

Two sketches. Unframed/unmounted. Signed

A visit to Twycross zoo, was where I got my reference for my Western lowland gorilla baby. I'd seen Shufa when he was first born and was lucky to re-visit a year later and see how he'd grown - he was still attached to his mum but was lovely to see him walking about on his own. My aim was to capture something of his personality and portray a sense of movement through energised mark making. Multiple images of Shufa helps to create a sense of animation and different behaviour patterns.

Artist and tutor Marie Antoniou has been painting most of her life. She is well known for her unique depiction of wildlife which have earned her numerous awards and accolades. Capturing the life and energy of my subjects is key and this gives me the opportunity to be expressive with my technique whether through colour pencil or painting - Over the last 7 years she has exhibited with the David Shepherd Wildlife artist of the year and more recently the sketch for survival exhibition tour and auction helping raise vital funds for wildlife. She is represented by several galleries and her paintings are part of many private collections.
