Peacock tarantula

Watercolour paint and pen

21 x 29.7 cm

Unframed/unmounted. Signed

I drew an invertebrate because they are often overlooked in favour of charismatic vertebrates, despite being an essential contributor to biodiversity, and suffering the same widespread declines as many better represented species. They are incredibly diverse and beautiful, as shown by the stunning, but critically endangered peacock tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica).

I am a full time PhD student studying molecular ecology, but love to draw in my spare time. I am inspired by nature, and usually work with black pen to produce line and dot work but am exploring more the use of watercolour paints to add colour.
